Understanding Calibration

This reference, often referred to as a calibrator, serves as the gold standard for accuracy. The primary goal of calibration is to determine how accurate the DUT is compared to a known reference. During this process, the DUT’s measurement results are meticulously compared to the output of the reference, which is maintained to ensure its accuracy.
Why Calibration is Essential
Calibration is much like taking your car in for a routine checkup. Just as regular maintenance ensures your vehicle runs smoothly and safely, calibration ensures the accuracy and reliability of your testing equipment. Over time, the accuracy of any instrument can drift due to environmental conditions, usage, and other factors. Establishing Calibration Intervals
It is the responsibility of the user to determine an appropriate calibration interval for their device. There are several factors to take into account, including the type of instrument, its usage, and the environmental conditions it is exposed to. While annual calibration is common and recommended, it is not mandatory under ISO 9001 or ISO 17025. However, these standards do require that testing equipment functions with sufficient accuracy for its intended purpose. Factory Calibration vs. ISO 17025 Calibration
Factory Calibration: This is OMICRON’s standard service, where your device undergoes a comprehensive check. During factory calibration, the device is fully tested, calibrated, and adjusted. All relevant technical limit values are checked in a climate-controlled environment. Additionally, the device is cleaned, and any wear parts are replaced. This service ensures that your device is brought back to its best possible condition, enhancing its reliability and lifespan.
ISO 17025 Calibration: OMICRON Calibrations is a globally recognized accredited ISO/IEC 17025 calibration laboratory. This service is for customers who require a defined measurement uncertainty and traceability. The process includes an as-found calibration, followed by factory calibration, and a final as-left calibration. This ensures the highest level of accuracy and reliability, meeting the stringent requirements of various industries.
Differences Between ISO 9001 and ISO 17025
ISO 9001: This is a quality management standard that any organization can follow. The international standard addresses calibration primarily in clause 7.1.5, which deals with monitoring and measuring resources. It requires organizations to determine appropriate calibration intervals based on the type of equipment, its usage, and the manufacturer’s recommendations.
ISO 17025: This standard specifies the general requirements for the competence of testing and calibration laboratories. It ensures that laboratories operate competently and generate valid results, which are recognized nationally and internationally. Unlike ISO 9001, which is a certification for organizations, ISO 17025 is an accreditation for calibration laboratories.
